Kai Tak Airport Hong Kong Print
The airport that defined an era of aviation.
From the 1960s onwards, the rapid growth of air travel transformed Hong Kong's Kai Tak Airport. As passenger numbers increased and aircraft grew larger, the densely populated streets of Kowloon became the backdrop to one of aviation's most recognisable approaches.
By the 1990s, wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 747 were a familiar sight above the city's rooftops. Approaching Runway 13, pilots made a sharp right turn near Checkerboard Hill before lining up with the runway, passing remarkably close to the surrounding buildings. Despite operating with a single runway, Kai Tak handled 29.5 million international passengers in 1996, ranking third worldwide for international passenger traffic.
In this artwork, a Boeing 747-200 VR-HKG captures the final decade of Kai Tak, surrounded by the distinctive architecture, neon signs and densely packed streets of Kowloon. When the airport closed in July 1998, it marked the end of one of the most recognisable chapters in aviation history.
